Buy from local producers! This is a message we've been hearing a lot lately, but do you know the benefits? Health and sustainability are two great reasons to eat more local foods. But they are not the only reasons. Here are some surprising and not so surprising benefits:
1
Fresh food and better taste. When food is picked and eaten fresh, it not only has more nutrients but also a better taste.
2
By supporting local producers you encourage the local economy. By choosing locally produced food, you support the community and contribute to keeping local producers in the domestic market. Thus, more jobs are created locally, the community is thriving, and people are more connected.
3
Local products create community and connection. In our online-obsessed and increasingly isolated world, loneliness is an emerging problem. Shopping/volunteering at a local market eliminates this trend, and this can help you build meaningful human interactions and connections. If you get to know the producers who make your food and products, you have more trust in what you buy and also have the opportunity to be in touch with producers on a regular basis.
4
Better health. Studies have shown that communities with a larger volume of local businesses have a lower rate of obesity, diabetes, and mortality. Researchers believe that this is because people in these communities have direct access to local fruits, vegetables, and other products that don’t contain pesticides and hormones.
5
Local products promote local "wealth". In addition to helping people in the community to be healthier, local shopping makes the community richer. Researchers in the Chicago study found that out of every $ 100 spent on a local business, $ 68 remains in the community. Buying from a supermarket - out of $ 100 spent, only $ 43 remains in the community.
6
Reducing fuel use. Local purchasing reduces the amount of transport required to obtain products from the manufacturer. It is estimated that 250,000 tonnes of gas that caused global warming can be attributed to the transport of products (by aircraft, trucks, ships, and other forms of transport).
7
Nutritious seasonal food. Foods that are grown locally and according to their season have been shown to contain much more nutrients than their non-traditionally produced counterparts.
8
There is much less packaging involved. Plastic is a global problem and can be easily tackled by choosing reusables instead of plastic. If you choose to buy locally, most items have limited packaging. You can bring your own reusable bags! Choose to shop locally, give up plastic, and join the #CrushPlastic movement of One Green Planet.
9
You know where the product comes from if you buy it locally. How are your foods produced? What types of pesticides or herbicides are used for your products? Does body butter contain ingredients such as palm oil? This allows you to make healthier choices for yourself.
